Our Story

Why we built this

In December 2019 I lost my Dad. We knew it was coming, but the grief still hits hard. What compounded things was that I was living in the UK. Grief and the guilt of distance are a horrible combination.

I was fortunate; I made it home to see him before he passed, my wife and kids sadly did not. They landed mere hours after he'd taken his final breath.

I thought things might get easier in the aftermath. Instead we quickly had to switch into organisation mode. Organising a funeral; which funeral director to choose, who would preside over the ceremony and where would that take place, who would deliver the eulogies - it was exhausting.

It wasn't until a few months after the funeral, long after I'd returned to the UK, that I received a message from a friend in Sydney. Someone had tagged Dad in a Facebook post asking a question. They obviously had no idea that Dad was no longer with us.

This brought into focus how "online" Dad still was. Mum was still paying for subscriptions in his name as she was wracked with grief. Dad's social profiles were still active. He was still receiving emails from his favourite sporting teams. Online, it was as if nothing had happened.

If you've ever tried to close down a social account on behalf of a deceased person, you know how my next few weeks went. There were breadcrumbs scattered and a few passwords I could use, but none of it was easy. At the time I thought there must be an easier way. Little did I know that I would go on to create it.
