Act quickly: Streaming services charge monthly. The sooner you cancel, the less you'll pay. Most services won't proactively refund charges - you need to ask.

Quick Overview

Every streaming service handles deceased accounts differently. Here's what to expect:

Service Death Certificate Required? Refunds? Difficulty
Netflix No (but helpful) Usually yes Easy
Spotify Yes Sometimes Easy
Disney+ Yes Case by case Medium
Stan Yes Usually yes Easy
Amazon Prime Yes Pro-rated Medium
Apple TV+ Yes Yes Medium

Netflix

Netflix is generally straightforward to cancel and good about refunds.

If You Have Account Access

  1. Log into the account
  2. Go to Account settings
  3. Click "Cancel Membership"
  4. Confirm cancellation

Without Account Access

  1. Contact Netflix support via chat or phone
  2. Explain the account holder has passed away
  3. Provide the account email address
  4. They may ask for a death certificate (email it to them)
  5. Request a refund for recent charges

Netflix Support:
Phone: 1800 071 578 (Australia)
Or use the chat function at help.netflix.com

Spotify

Spotify has a specific process for deceased users.

Cancellation Process

  1. Email Spotify support at privacy@spotify.com
  2. Include "Deceased Account Holder" in the subject line
  3. Provide:
    • The account holder's name
    • The email address associated with the account
    • A copy of the death certificate
    • Your relationship to the deceased
  4. Request cancellation and any applicable refunds

Spotify typically responds within a few business days and will cancel the account. Refunds depend on when the last charge occurred.

Disney+

Disney+ requires contact with their support team.

Cancellation Process

  1. Contact Disney+ support via their Help Centre
  2. Select "Billing" then "Cancel subscription"
  3. Choose to chat with an agent
  4. Explain the situation and provide:
    • Account holder's name and email
    • Death certificate
    • Your identification

Disney+ Support:
help.disneyplus.com - Use the chat function

Stan

Stan is an Australian service and generally cooperative with estate matters.

Cancellation Process

  1. Email Stan at help@stan.com.au
  2. Include:
    • Account holder's name and email
    • Death certificate
    • Your contact details
  3. Request cancellation and refund for unused period

Stan typically processes these requests within a few days and is generally good about providing refunds.

Amazon Prime Video

Amazon Prime Video is often bundled with Amazon Prime membership, which includes shipping benefits. Cancelling affects both.

Cancellation Process

  1. Contact Amazon Customer Service
  2. Request to speak with a supervisor about a deceased account
  3. Provide:
    • Account holder's name and email
    • Death certificate
    • Your identification and relationship
  4. Request account closure and pro-rated refund
Note: Amazon may also have gift card balances, pending orders, or other credits. Ask about these when closing the account.

Apple TV+ and Apple Subscriptions

Apple subscriptions (TV+, Music, iCloud, etc.) are all managed through the Apple ID.

Cancellation Process

  1. Contact Apple Support at support.apple.com
  2. Request help with a deceased account holder
  3. Apple will require:
    • Death certificate
    • Proof you're the estate representative
    • Court order (in some cases)

Apple is stricter than most services due to privacy policies. If the deceased set up a Digital Legacy Contact, that person can access the account more easily.

Other Common Subscriptions

Don't forget these often-overlooked services:

  • YouTube Premium - Contact Google support
  • Foxtel/Binge - Call 1300 130 999
  • Kayo - Same as Foxtel (same company)
  • Paramount+ - Contact via help.paramountplus.com
  • Audible - Contact Amazon (same company)
  • News subscriptions - Contact each publisher directly

Getting Refunds (The Hard Part)

Getting refunds sounds simple, but here's what it actually involves:

  • Multiple phone calls or chats - Each service is a separate conversation, often with long wait times
  • Explaining the situation repeatedly - To people who may not understand or care
  • Emailing documentation - Death certificates, proof of relationship, your ID
  • Following up - Many requests get lost or ignored the first time
  • Escalating when refused - First-line support often says no; you need supervisors
The real cost: Even if you successfully cancel 10 subscriptions averaging $15/month, you've saved $150 - but spent 5+ hours on hold, sending emails, and dealing with frustrating customer service. During a time when you have far more important things to focus on.

Streaming is Just the Beginning

You've now read guides for cancelling streaming services. But your loved one probably also had:

  • Social media accounts (Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Twitter)
  • Email accounts (Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo)
  • Shopping accounts (Amazon, eBay, online stores)
  • Financial services (PayPal, Afterpay, buy-now-pay-later)
  • Utilities and services (phone plans, internet, insurance)
  • Apps and software (Adobe, Microsoft, mobile apps)
  • Memberships (gyms, clubs, professional associations)
  • And dozens more you probably don't even know about

The average person has over 100 online accounts. Each one is a separate process, separate documentation, separate follow-up. This is why families come to us.

Stopping Future Charges

If you can't cancel accounts quickly, consider these interim measures:

  • Cancel the credit card - Contact the bank to close or replace the card being charged
  • Block the merchant - Some banks let you block specific merchants
  • Set up a mail redirect - So you receive emails about failed payments and can respond

We'll cancel all subscriptions for you

Streaming is just the start. We handle 100+ platforms so you don't have to contact them all.
