How to Close or Memorialize an Instagram Account After Someone Dies

Instagram accounts don't disappear when someone passes away. Here's what families need to know - and why most find the process more difficult than expected.

Your Two Options

Instagram (owned by Meta) gives families two choices for a deceased person's account:

Memorialize

The account shows "Remembering" before their username. Posts remain visible but no one can log in.

Who can request: Anyone with proof of death.

Remove

The account and all content is permanently deleted. This cannot be undone.

Who can request: Immediate family only, with documentation.

Important: Unlike some platforms, Instagram does NOT allow families to download photos or data from a deceased person's account - even with a death certificate. If preserving memories matters, you'll need to save what you can from public posts before requesting any action.

What You'll Need

The documentation requirements differ depending on what you're requesting:

For Memorialization

  • The deceased's Instagram username
  • Proof of death (obituary, death certificate, or news article)

For Account Removal

  • Death certificate (required)
  • Proof you're an immediate family member
  • Your government-issued ID
  • The deceased's Instagram username

The removal process requires significantly more documentation - and Instagram's definition of "immediate family" is strict. De facto partners, cousins, and close friends generally don't qualify.

The Reality: What Families Actually Experience

Here's what Instagram's official process doesn't tell you:

Expect Delays

Instagram provides no timeline and sends no confirmation. You submit your request and... wait. Most families report 2-4 weeks, but some wait months. There's no way to check status or expedite.

No Response is Common

Many requests seem to disappear into a void. If nothing happens after 3 weeks, you'll likely need to resubmit - and start waiting again. There's no customer service number to call.

Documentation Rejections

Instagram may reject your documentation without clear explanation. Common issues include: name mismatches between documents, unclear relationship proof, or documents in languages other than English.

The Form Changes

Meta regularly updates their help center and moves forms around. Instructions you find online may be outdated. The process that worked for someone six months ago may not work today.

Timeline Expectations

Memorialization 1-4 weeks (sometimes longer)
Account Removal 2-6 weeks (sometimes longer)
If you need to resubmit Add another 2-4 weeks

And remember - this is just Instagram. Most people have accounts on 50-100+ platforms, each with their own process, documentation requirements, and wait times.

The Bigger Picture

While you're waiting for Instagram to respond, there are also:

  • Facebook (separate process, even though it's the same company)
  • Email accounts (Gmail, Outlook - each requiring formal requests)
  • Streaming services still charging monthly
  • Shopping accounts with saved payment details
  • Banking apps, utilities, subscriptions...

Each platform has different requirements. Some need forms. Some need faxes. Some have online processes. Some require you to call. Some don't respond without multiple follow-ups.

This is why most families find managing a digital estate overwhelming - especially while grieving.
